Waterfront

Beautiful WEST facing lakeside cottage on Big Hawk Lake. Newly renovated. Very private cottage nestled in tall trees. Quiet. Serene. Private. Gorgeous views. Loons call at night. Stars are bright. The waterfront is over 100 feet wide and the cottage is only 50 feet from the water. The property is natural woodlands that slopes gently to the lake. There is a large floating dock where you can moor your own boat or just lay out and relax. The lake is a good size for tubing or waterskiing. Perfect for family vacations and romantic escapes. Owner provides loads of amenities, and many are brand new including the mattresses, tub, sinks, toilets, kitchen and so on. This cottage is absolutely ideal for people seeking a retreat from the big city.

The master bedroom overlooks the lake from your pillow through glass sliding doors that accesses a large front deck. This room has a private two piece bathroom.

The property is west facing. There are no neighbours behind. We are on a private road on a wide peninsula - just trees, lake and sky.

The cottage is located on a rare sandy bay on Big Hawk Lake. It is south-west of Algonquin Park. It is a 20 minute drive south to Minden, 30 minutes to Haliburton, and a 25 minute drive north to Dorset on hwy 35. There are many attractions, golf courses, restaurants, art studios, shops, hiking and activities in the area. Or, if you just want to stay put for the week, that's perfect too !

Big Hawk Lake connects to a series of lakes which can be accessed by boat. There are 2 marinas nearby. There are around 5 different portages connecting to canoe routes. The land across the lake to the west and north of us is mostly crown land with understated trail and portage access. There are rapids and day campsites minutes away. Our private road begins just past the lovely historical log chute at the Big Hawk Dam.

Having never rented a cottage from strangers before (but being long-time cottagers), we took a chance and rented this cottage for a week. It was perfect - easy to get to from Durham Region, clean, bright, cozy, comfortable - it had everything we needed. The big deck facing the lake was fantastic, it was close to the water, and the beach was great for our young children. The beach is slightly rocky with pebbles and small stones, but the water is sandy with no weeds, and the kids had no complaints about running around in bare feet. It was nice to be able to set up our chairs on the beach, close to the water. The lake is clean and was quiet the week we were there, and the property is in a bay, so it's set back from the main waterway. One thing to note - the water off the end of the dock when we were there was only about 3.5 feet deep, so you can't jump off the end of the dock. The property owners live next door, and they were so lovely and helpful. I would definitely recommend this cottage!

Up one arrival we were in love with this cottage. It is exactly what a classic cottage should be.

We went with our two young boys and had a perfect week that included: swimming, collecting rocks, 2 days of canoeing (rented from the nearby marina), relaxing on the dock and the deck and enjoying the magnificent sunsets. The water was very clean and reminded me of the lakes I used to swim in when I was young.

The owner lives next door and was unobtrusive but available for tips on where to go canoeing or hiking and as he has been on the lake for 50 years, knows everything. :)

Julia also was wonderful to deal with and responded to my queries very quickly.

We plan to back again!

me and my friends spent a weekend at this cottage. this cottage is beautifully located in front of lake hawk. interior is also very roomy with 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom, living room and a kitchen. during evening time outside deck is where we spent most of our time with the nice view of sunset. we also loved swimming in the lake in front with water not too cold. the owner was a very nice guy he showed us the cottage upon arrival and gave us information on places nearby. Julia, we want to thank you for all your help over email answering all my questions and helping me get this cottage within short time. we are definitely going to recommend our friends and other people and also looking to come back in near future.
thank you.

Myself and my wife spent a weekend at this cottage, last weekend.

Communication with Julia was excellent as she patiently answered all our questions and emailed us our Welcome Kit, with everything we needed to know for our stay.

The cottage itself is gorgeous. The photos on this site don't quite do it justice. Sunsets are awesome and the view from the master bedroom (and den) are amazing.

It is well renovated and maintained, clean, comfortable with a good sized kitchen.

The surroundings are perfect for a cottage retreat. It is nestled amongst trees, right on the water and there are only (noticeable) neighbours to one side, separated enough to give complete privacy.

The neighbours are in fact that Julia's parents, the very welcoming and friendly, Don and Nan. They are not in the least bit invasive in fact their relaxed and friendly demeanour added to our visit.

Stock up on food (and libations!) before you get there, although it's only a 20-25 min drive to the nearest, decent-size town, Minden. While we were there, we fished and swam in the lake (both comfortably done from the private dock). I imagine it would also be a great place to kayak or hire a boat as there are three connected lakes.

Our only reservation before booking was that it had not yet been reviewed.... I am very pleased to be the first (of hopefully many) to report that I would recommend this cottage and would revisit in a heartbeat.

Thanks for a great stay!!
