We were a family of 4 adults staying at this country-like property surrounded by farm fields and other cottages by the lake.

Pros: Ruth was very pleasant and accommodating, ready to assist in whatever questions or concerns we had. The cottage was well equipped and had all the amenities one could wish for in a cottage.

Cons: If you're a beach person, this definitely is not a child or senior friendly climb down to the beach since there was literally a long extremely steep dangerous ladder like staircase with a rail leading you down to the beach. Lake was alright but beach full of pebbles which was not a dealbreaker for us.

The waterfront lake view photos shown on the website unfortunately don't depict the steep climb down.

Although there is space for 8 people, we found the room layout awkward and lacking total privacy if actually 8 people stayed there. There was 4 of us so we took the upstairs bedroom, which consisted of 2 queen beds and fortunately had en suite bathroom.
However when the 3rd couple showed up for the weekend, we realized how awkward and uncomfortable it would have been in terms of privacy, had we been sharing the space all week long. There are 2 bedrooms downstairs but only separated by from each other by the door leading to each other and one bedroom has doors leading out to the hallway.

Also when you get there, you'll be told to conserve water as it's in a storage tank and can potentially run out on you. Dealbreaker for us.

Owner response:
Thanks for your comments following your vacation at Yesteryear Cottage. It's good to have confirmed that the cottage is well equipped with full amenities... thanks for that! It was a pleasure meeting you and your parents (your Dad seemed to really enjoy his bike rides around the neighbourhood)!

You are correct (as in the picture) there are stairs with a sturdy railing leading to the private waterfront. The pitch of the stairs and number of steps accommodate safe (up to Code) beach access with the ability to adjust them for high water levels as experienced in all of the Great Lakes this year. Unlike many cottages, the high water did not eliminate the beach at Yesteryear Cottage.

Many guest families with small children and pets have used the stairs and thoroughly enjoyed the beach. I'm sorry to hear it was an issue for your adult children and parents, although by observation since we live close by, the stairs didn't seem to deter you from using the beach.

I wish you had raised this issue when I checked with you after your first full day to answer any questions and make sure there was nothing you needed. The time for us to fix or change something is at the beginning, rather than after the fact. Had I known your concern I would have arranged for you to use neighbouring beach access. Going forward, plans have been finalized for an extensive shore work project this fall (2019) which includes new stairs!

When vacationing on a Great Lake, the beach is ever-changing due to the wind and wave action. Near the waters' edge at times can be a combination of sand and beach pebbles, but there is always a sand bottom and sand on the beach itself.

We find your privacy comment very misleading. It's interesting that you felt the bedrooms were inadequate for 6 guests, no children and no pets. In addition to the upstairs suite with 2 queen beds, there are also 2 bedrooms on the main level with solid wood doors that close for complete privacy. The character, quaintness, and many doors at Yesteryear Cottage are part of the charm that makes cottage life what it is; to find absolute privacy would require going to a hotel/motel with concrete walls and double steel doors.

The water "storage tank" is actually a 2,000 gallon cistern. Conserving water is always a good thing, but the reality is that water doesn't come from a municipal pipe in rural areas, so the message during orientation to conserve water is not untoward at all. The specific words used are "use it, but please don't waste it, in other words no 40 minute showers". The water delivery haulers require notice and do not deliver 7 days a week. We check the cistern level regularly and order water as required. On the positive side, you didn't run out of water!

Hundreds of guests have enjoyed this lovely cottage and we have not experienced similar comments. We realize that there are some families that do not embrace cottage living ....this might be the situation.

We had a wonderful week at this beautiful 'cottage', with all anyone could ask for in a large, comfortable, well-equiped home. We were 5 adults, an infant, and a terrier who happens to love swimming. There was plenty of space for us, plus a bedroom we never used, so more people would certainly be comfortable here. We enjoyed lawn darts, morning walks for exercise down a relatively quiet country road, camp fires, and playing music on the beach. The air conditioning was a treat on hot afternoons, and the back porch was lovely for reading (or doing work for those who were inclined) while overlooking the lake. We really enjoyed relaxing at this beautiful cottage and getting to know our new granddaughter/niece (and her parents, of course!)

This was the perfect spot for our family. The area was open, the cottage had room to roam and there was always plenty of room. We had 8 adults 2 grand children and a couple dogs and all was good. We will probably look into this cottage again. If the owners ever want to sell it please look us up.

We had an amazing week at Yesteryear! The cottage is spacious, enough room for all of us, including 2 kids and 2 dogs. The beach, waterfront and lake was awesome. We had calm water, wavy water and bodysurfing water! We built sandcastles and collected pretty walks. The property provided lots of room for the kids to play tag and the dogs to join in. BBQ dinners and s'mores on the fire pit topped off great days. Ruth was a wonderful host! Highly recommend, hope to be back!

Thank you Ruth for a lovely few days. We were lucky to find this cottage available for a last minute short stay. The cottage was quite comfortable with lots of room for everyone, including our large puppy. So glad you told us about the nearby dog friendly beach. Hudson had a blast! Great place to unwind. Cottage was very well equipped and had everything we needed. Stairs to beach a bit steep, but otherwise highly recommended.
