As the owners, we are neighbors to the cottage. The Hummingbird cottage is located on a dead-end road that becomes Trail 53 of the Gatineau Park. That trail, depending on the season, is a hiking/
bicycling and cross-country ski trail. Trail 53 goes all the way to Parking 17 in Wakefield (9 kms) where a nice pathway brings you into the heart of the village. From the cottage, there is a loop of 8 kms that goes from Lake Philippe road to Parking 19 - Trail 51 - Trail 53 and back to the cottage. Or the other way around, of course!
Lake Philippe is located about 3.5 kms from the cottage. Bicycle access is free. There is a daily fee per car to access the park. Lake Philippe offers canoe/kayak/paddle boat and paddle board rental from the long weekend in May to the long weekend in October. It also offers 2 beaches: Breton Beach is very long, offers lots of shade and grass areas which are great for picnics. Parent Beach is smaller and very sandy. Lake Lapêche is the gem of the Gatineau Park and bigger than Lake Philippe. Located about 15 kms from the cottage, it also offers canoe/kayak/paddle boat and paddle board rental for the summer season. The beach is very beautiful, long and sandy.
In the winter, you can do the loop connecting to the cross-country ski Trail 53 across the fields in front of the cottage. You can also ski towards Parking 17 in Wakefield or ski towards Parking 19 and get onto Trail 50 to discover the Lake Philippe area. Trail 50 goes all the way to Chelsea and also connects to Trail 52 which goes to Parking 17 in Wakefield and you can come back to the cottage using Trail 53. This is a more challenging loop of about 25 kms, a very nice ski and of course, the same loop is also great for bicycling.
From the cottage, the snowshoeing in the fields and forests is endless. There are 2 snowshoe trails 73 and 74 accessible from the Parking 19 to discover the Lake Philippe area. There is a snowshoe trail also from Parking 17 in Wakefield.
Rentals for skis, snowshoes and bikes is available in Wakefied. It will be our pleasure to send you the information.
Wakefield village is absolutely gorgeous with its very many different restaurants and boutiques that are all quite unique.
