****OFF THE GRID - SOLAR PANEL POWERED****
We are all familiar with the phrase "get away from it all", and cottages are a time-honoured way of doing this. Once in a while we come across a cottage rental that really embodies this concept - and while Clearwater Cottage is "off the grid" in that it is solar powered, it has a wonderfully comfortable and modern feel to it. Since it sits on 8 acres with over 400 feet of shoreline, you definitely are "away" from it.
When you enter the cottage, you'll be enchanted with a traditional cottage feel in a bright clean setting. The open concept kitchen-living-dining area is comfy and inviting. A door from the living room leads to one of the star attractions here - the screened sun deck. From this perch you can enjoy the view of the lake and waterfront from the screened comfort. The cottage sleeps up to 5 people in two very comfortable bedrooms, separated by the 4-piece bathroom, rounding out the cottage interior.
A flight of limestone stairs takes you to a sloped waterfront, where you will find comfortable seating at lakeside. The water is fairly deep from the dock, so entry is via the ladder. The lake is clear and weed freed. Swimming to the immediate right of the dock close to the shore is not recommended due to some ancient fallen tree stumps. The other side of the dock is fine. You will enjoy scenic views both ways on the lake with very few neighbours in your sightlines.
Out and about, the nearby towns of Magnetawan (20 minutes) and Burks Falls (30 minutes) will have what you need in terms of groceries and supplies. If you're coming here, we expect it's for relaxation and scenery, but if you do want something offered by a bit larger centre, Huntsville and Parry Sound are both within an hours drive, all of it through scenic cottage country. Bring your camera!
We don't think a visit here would be complete without at least one trip to the Cornball Store, just 10 minutes from the cottage. Here you can find pizza, ice cream and some top-notch baked goods (Don't be surprised if this becomes a daily ritual). For something different, make sure you take a stroll through the Midlothian Sculpture Park (commonly known as Screaming Heads).
Since the heating, stove and refrigerator are all propane driven, you'll have plenty of electricity for essentials such as lighting and charging your electronic devices, but enjoying such a unique getaway does mean that you should be willing to adjust your habits a little so as to ensure the continuity of the water and electric supply and be comfortable with simple daily operation of a water pump or a generator if your solar batteries are drained. We might not recommened this for the casual vacationer who has never been to cottage country, but this gem is a wonderful, wonderful spot for those willing to experience off-grid.
