In previous years, our 5000 sq. ft. lodge has provided shared accommodation and dining services for people from near and far. For now however, it seems that this may not be the ideal thing to do. Given the fact that people are looking for somewhere private to safely gather, we are giving people the opportunity to rent our entire air-conditioned, 6-bedroom lakeside lodge as a cottage rental. While not always top of mind, it is worth noting that the lodge has an automatic standby generator to ensure an unlikely (but possible :) power cut won't interrupt your stay! The Lodge is situated on beautiful Little Hawk Lake which is mostly Crown Land (65%+). The lake is surrounded by forests and trails, with a Conservation area at the North end. This is the perfect spot to unwind with your loved ones and friends. The main floor of the lodge has a large lounge and bar area, situated around an old stone fireplace. There is a piano in the lounge and lots of games, large flat satellite TV, DVD's, puzzles and books to choose from. You will have access to our commercial kitchen and a screened in BBQ area. Depending on the weather, people can dine in our indoor dining area or in a large screened in porch overlooking the lake. Tables can easily be arranged into different configurations to suit various sized groups. There are two, 2-piece washrooms on the main floor. Six, well appointed bedrooms, each with their own ensuite, can be found on the second floor. From the second floor you can exit to a tiered deck, which gives you an additional area to gather. You can continue down steps from the deck to a well landscaped garden with an outdoor fire pit and space to play a selection of outdoor games. Want an additional way to relax? Enjoy a soak in our screened in, 8-person hot tub, overlooking the lake.
During your stay, you will have access to canoes, kayaks, SUP's, a paddle boat, and snowshoes. Guests can also borrow inner tubes to take for a river ride, not far from the lodge. There is a large swimming platform at the end of our dock with chairs to lounge on and a lily pad for additional fun in the water. This is also a great spot to stargaze when the sun sets!
Little Hawk Lake is a quiet hidden gem with 90%+ water-access only cottages. We own one of the small marinas by the lodge servicing the water access cottages and are very familiar with the lake. Upon your arrival, we are happy to give you a tour of the lake to familiarize you with fun opportunities - jumping rocks, a rope swing on a small island, paddle routes and spots where you can portage. The water level fluctuates by as much as 8 ft. over the course of a year. The shoreline grows as the summer progresses.
When you rent our lodge, we are also including a 1-day tin boat or pontoon boat rental, for those that have a valid boaters license. A bow rider with water skis and a tube can also be arranged for an additional fee, with advance notice. Thinking about bringing your own boat? We have room to park your trailer and can find you a spot on our dock to park your boat. For those of you visiting in the winter, we have a ton of space for snowmobile trailers, if that's your thing.
There are some great hiking trails behind our property and a variety of area attractions to explore. Within 20-30 minutes, there are 3 small towns, each with something interesting to offer. It is about 50 minutes to the west gate of Algonquin Provincial Park. Two larger towns, Huntsville and Bracebridge, are about an hour away. We'll provide you with a list of places to eat and our favorite spots to visit, prior to your stay. If you are looking for some unique experiences to do during your stay, make sure to check out Yours Outdoors and Haliburton Forest. Their activities are very popular and usually require advance bookings.
A Bit About Us: Greg and Anna (that's me) bought Oakview Lodge and Marina in the fall of 2015. I had been teaching for 23 years and Greg had been in the corporate world for far too long. We were both longing for a change and the timing seemed right. Our oldest daughter was finishing up her undergrad, our middle daughter was starting university and our youngest daughter was starting grade 9. We all knew the area in the winter because I had been organizing ski groups to Sir Sam's for the past 8 years and we had heard great things about it in the summer months as well. After living on the water for 18 years, Greg was very familiar with boats. Greg and I both love the outdoors, enjoy the company of others and felt running the lodge would be a great adventure.
Our youngest and oldest daughters now live in Ottawa. Our middle daughter is currently living in Sweden, working on a Master's of Architecture. That leaves just Greg and I. We live in a self-contained apartment on the third level of our lodge, but are happy to stay off site during your stay, if that is what you prefer. We can be available or as invisible as you want. Whatever your choice, we'll meet you on your arrival to go over the basics and answer any questions you may have.
We have had experience running a small restaurant, so if you are interested in having someone cook meals for you, we are happy to help out. For an extra fee, we can discuss your dietary preferences and can come up with a plan.
What Makes Us Special: If you are an outdoor enthusiast and/or are looking for a spotless place with historic charm, contemporary accommodations with separate indoor spaces to escape, easy access to hiking/snowmobile trails, canoe routes, deep water to swim in and lots of fresh air, this is an incredible spot to consider.
The lake is relatively quiet, the shoreline is over 65% Crown Land, and there isn't an abundance of motorized boat traffic. We feel the best way to explore it is by canoe or kayak! We do however, have a tin boat, pontoon boat and a bow rider with skis and a tube that you are welcome to rent. As mentioned previously, included in the cost of your stay is a complimentary 1-day tin or pontoon boat rental. We will familiarize you with appropriate boat etiquette, so that the shoreline is protected and you can enjoy boating safely.
Many people stay at our lodge due to our close proximity to a variety of hiking and snowmobile trails. If that's something you enjoy, you won't be disappointed. Two of what we feel are the best hiking trails in the area can be accessed just a short walk up the road. For snowmobiling in the winter, the OFSC Top B Trail part of the RAP Tour, runs directly in front of our lodge. There are some nice cycling trails in the area for more experienced cyclists, and great snowshoeing and Nordic ski trails not far from us. Sir Sam's Ski and Ride is also in the area for downhill skiing, snowboarding and mountain biking.
This may NOT be the best place for you if you have small children, want to lounge on a secluded beach, and/or need access to high speed internet.
We have been welcoming guests to our lodge for shared accommodation since 2015, and based on our reviews on Booking.com, TripAdvisor, Google and Facebook, I think it's safe to say we've figured things out. The only difference in renting our entire lodge is the fact that you will be on your own and will be doing your own cooking.
When you stay at our lodge, all of the details have been taken care of. All you need to do is show up and enjoy!
Thank you for considering a stay at Oakview Lodge,
Anna and Greg. :)
