This newly built cottage on Hog Lake in Emsdale is 24 kms north of Huntsville & 4 kms south of Kearney. It has main floor master with Queen bed and 3 piece bath and two bedrooms in the walkout lower level with 1 queen and the other two sets of bunk beds (1 single/ single & 1 single/double). with another full 3 piece bath in lower level. Muskoka/Screened room is attached and off of dining room. Internet is available. The cottage is surrounded by mulch to allow nature to return. The water is 6' deep off the end of the dock and you can walk in and out beside the dock for easy access. The cottage rental comes with a kayak, canoe, paddle boat, a tin boat with an electric motor for fishing or a tour of the lake and horseshoe pit. The Seguin trail is right next to the property for ATV riding if you have one and you can ride into the town of Kearney which is 4km away where you will find restaurants/pub, LCBO and a few others. Novar is 12km away where you will find Foodland with a Subway and LCBO. Huntsville is 24km away where you will find golf, an Independant grocer, Walmart, Canadian Tire and many more things to do on a rainy day.
Drinking water The water in the taps is from a well and is safe to drink.
There is a great spring just down the road to fill up the water cooler or other water jugs. Leaving the driveway, turn left and about 100 meters down the road there is a dip on the right, just before the next house. There are bottles for the water cooler. If you figure out how to put a new bottle on the cooler without splashing water everywhere, you'll be the first. Please wipe any spill to help protect the floors.
TV Upstairs there is satellite TV and the TV has Netflix built in (press the ?Smart Hub? button on the remote). It's a little slow but just give it a minute when you get the ?preparing the TV? message. Depending on which way the wind is blowing the internet might be fast enough to watch a movie.
Downstairs is another DVD player and an Apple TV. If you have videos on your iPhone or iPad you can stream to the Apple TV to watch them (you might need your kids to show you how).
There is a collection of old DVD movies which is much easier and less frustrating than waiting for Netflix. Hopefully you can find something to watch on a rainy day.
Lake activities There are 3 boats for you to use:
* Paddle boat - Please be careful of the water wheel and rudder when pulling it out of the water * Canoe * Aluminum fishing boat with an electric motor. The motor is in the deck box down at the lake and the battery is on a charger in the screened porch. Please put the battery back on the charger when you're done and place the motor back in the deck box at the end of your stay. Please do not totally discharge the battery. Totally discharging the battery will ruin it.
Paddles and a safety kit are in the front hall closet or the deck box at the lake. We do have a variety of life jacket sizes that will accommodate most, however please bring your own to ensure the correct fit and effectiveness for all non-swimmers and children.
Please leave all boats up on shore or on the dock when you leave. You can leave them in the lake tied to the dock for the week. In the event of rain, please pull the boats out of the water and turn them over and tuck away the floaties, they will float away and you will have to go on a rescue mission to retrieve them. Please return all paddles to where you found them at the end of the week.
Water toys There are some noodles, water guns and other inflatable toys in the deck box at the lake or under the screened in porch (this supply varies week to week). There is an electric inflator in the basement linen closet to blow them up. There are also beach towels in the basement linen closet
Games, books, movies There is an assortment of games in the living room. There is a set of building blocks & marbles in the table in the basement, see how big of a structure you can make and let the marbles run. There are lots of books in the living room in case you forgot to bring something. Hopefully you'll find a cheesy novel to read while relaxing. Feel free to take an incomplete novel with you or leave one behind for our next guests.
BBQ There is a propane BBQ on the deck for your use. Please keep it away from the screened room when in use and it is your responsibility to clean it after each use to prevent unwanted wildlife from investigating the grease and dirty grill. The BBQ is now direct connect to propane so please make sure to turn if OFF.
Fire pit There is a fire pit outside but please check on the fire rating before starting a fire. If there hasn't been much rain then there may be restrictions on having a fire (yes, even in a totally contained fire pit like we have). You can find the current fire rating on the signs along the road. There is fire wood under the screened in porch for you to use but please be reasonable with your use.
There is a great little device for making kindling to start your fire. It is much safer than trying to chop very small pieces. Just put a piece of wood in it and use the back of the axe to hammer it down and end up with nice small pieces to start your fire.
Washer & dryer Laundry is available for your use, there is usually some laundry detergent left in the laundry room. Always helpful if you would consider washing up a load of towels before your departure to assist the cleaners with changeover day.
Ice maker There is a red ice maker on the kitchen counter. It is easy to use. Just pour water into the opening (yes there is only one opening) only fill up to the bottom of the ice basket, push the ON button and you're all set.
You'll need to add water now and then when the ADD WATER light comes on. If you want ice, you can leave it running during your stay. Please unplug and empty the ice & water at the end of your stay.
Water filter (the noise you hear from the furnace room) The water filtration system will recharge itself now and then and make some noise that sounds like a waterfall, don't worry, nothing is leaking. (unless you see a bunch of water on the floor, then please let us know)
Septic Everything out in the country that goes down the sinks and toilets goes into a septic system. Please don't put anything in the toilets except toilet paper or the septic system will get plugged up (and you can imagine how much we want to avoid dealing with that!)
Toolbox There is a small toolbox in the front closet if you're so inclined to fix something (there is always something to fix at a cottage)
