Snail Court - a place to unwind to a slow pace with the waves lapping on the shore, the birds singing in the trees, the peacefulness of just being still, with no agenda! This is a place for families to put aside busyness and appreciate simplicity. Simple & explicit cleaning requirements are further down the page and must be agreed upon. We love families with children and want to share our family vacation home with other families. This is not a cottage for all-night parties or loud music or a bunch of buddies getting away. It is also a non-smoking property. Guests must do a thorough cleaning prior to leaving. We cater to families with children - five people maximum of which no more than four can be 12+ due to new municipality rules (which also includes no outside music or fireworks). There is an outside security camera. Our waterfront cottage is on Lake Huron, amongst cedar trees, and provides lots of privacy from the road and neighbours. Be prepared to see paddlers or a family of geese pass by in the water. The main cottage is a clean one-story bungalow, with all-pine interior. Most rooms have ceiling fans, and as the cottage is surrounded by rock and trees, it is usually a comfortable temperature inside. Each room has new windows that open. You enter a small foyer where outerwear can be stored, and then you head into the kitchen with a microwave, 30" oven/ stove top and a full fridge with a small freezer on top, plus cupboards full of kitchenware including crock pot, coffee maker, toaster, George Foreman grill, casserole dishes, salad spinner, cutting boards, dishes, glassware, cutlery etc. There are also extra containers for you to store your leftover food in, for those hikes on the Bruce Trail. Paper towels, standard condiments and plastic wrap are supplied, as well as tea towels and dish soap. The water is tested monthly and is safe to drink. However, we prefer to bring water for drinking, and you may wish to do so also. There is a BBQ outside - tin foil provided. Remember though - clean the BBQ after each use, or a bear may find your crumbs.
From the kitchen, you see into the open concept dining area/living area. There is a large pine table for everyone to gather at, whether for a board game, or for a meal, or just good conversation. We do have wifi, and Amazon Firestick on the TV that you can use to sign in to your accounts.
The full bathroom features a tub with shower, plus toilet and sink in a vanity. Shampoo, liquid soap and toilet tissue provided. Please bring your own bathroom towels. Kitchen towels are provided though. There is hot water and good pressure.
Bedroom #1 has a closet and built-in drawers and has an Ikea white iron queen-sized bed that is already made up with linens for you. The new mattress is quality foam. Two people maximum in this room (new municipal rules)
Bedroom #2 also has a closet and built-in drawers, and has a single bed, and a double bed. Again, these mattresses are quality foam from Foamite and Ikea, and are made up and ready for you to sleep in. Two people maximum in this room. (new municipal rules)
The front sun room is our favourite - it is a great place to sit and read or just watch the water through the windows covering two walls.
You can also head out onto the front patio from the sun room. Outdoor patio furniture is available, including folding chairs that you can lie in, or sit in, or move to around the fire pit. Muskoka chairs are comfortable to sit and watch the water, and there are stacking plastic chairs for sitting around the fire. We do supply your first night of firewood, and then there are numerous places in the area to purchase more.
If you are looking for an indoor space for quiet conversation, there is an enclosed gazebo with basic furniture in it.
The property is normally set back from the water, but each year varies. Right now, it is 100 steps to the water. The water is shallow enough to allow young children to play with supervision, and deep enough for adults to swim. The water is clear, and water shoes are provided - the bottom varies from flat rock to boulders. Often, you can see baby geese, or paddlers. We do not have kayaks or canoes to offer, but feel free to bring your favourite non-motorized water toy. It is about a ten minute paddle to go directly across the bay, or you can spend endless time just paddling around in the bay. More experienced paddlers can head north or south along the shoreline of Lake Huron. The waters can be unpredictable though!
The cottage is inset along a scenic road. This well-treed property offers privacy from near-by neighbours and the road. Children may enjoy playing Robin Hood amongst the trees. The property is groomed and maintained on a regular basis.
The property is a short drive from Tobermory, where you will find a grocery store, churches, library, internet access, ChiCheeman ferry to Manitoulin Island, diving, tennis court, golf course, laundromat, airport, Fathom Five National Park, Parks Canada visitor centre, the grotto, Singing Sands, eateries and shops.
It is also a short enjoyable drive to Singing Sands beach and walkway, Bruce Trail, Cabot Head Lighthouse, Dunks Bay sand beach, Bruce Peninsula National Park, Flowerpot Island (requires boat ride). You will find an abundance of outdoor hiking and exploring opportunities.
Wildlife enjoys the serenity, and you will be sure to see plenty of birds, snakes, squirrels and chipmunks. Although you can feed them peanuts at the fire pit, you must be conscientious of cleaning up food - inside and outside - there have been bears nearby!
If you are looking for R&R, in a clean & quiet setting, then this may be the place for you. It is a country setting, so if the hydro was to go off, you have no water (except from the lake). There is a phone for local calls and incoming calls only - cell phones usually work. Public telephones are located in Tobermory.
You are the only ones on the property. We are accessible by phone at all times, and have someone available to assist with unexpected problems.
If your family is looking for a quiet, safe vacation, consider our cottage. Remember that guests are required to fully clean prior to departure (be sure to read the house rules), but you don't have to deal with bedding! We do require a written agreement prior to renting as well. This ensures that everyone has an enjoyable stay. Contact us if you have any questions.
