The Cottage: Just 2 hours from Toronto on the north shore of Lower Buckhorn Lake, this comfortable and updated cottage is the ideal place for families with children. Our private cottage is set back overlooking our large lawn area which has been professionally landscaped with beautiful granite rocks. There are steps into the shallow water for easy entrance (ideal for the little ones), or you can climb down from the spacious dock where there is plenty of room for everyone. Kids love swimming out to the raft "island", where they can spend hours safely enjoying the water. Lower Buckhorn Lake is a typical Kawarthas lake - quite warm because it's not overly deep at any point in the lake. It is also an excellent boating lake - plenty of little inlets and islands abound for exploring in your canoe or kayak, or open water for taking out your boat for tubing or waterskiing. **If you have questions about our lake, please ask me!!** Our cottage has 4 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms and and is suitable for families and groups with kids. We will not rent to large groups of young people, sorry. Guest Access: You'll have access to all kinds of toys to play with; paddleboat, canoe, swimming platform and various lawn toys like badminton, horseshoes and bocce ball. Our large lawn is safe and perfect for the kids to play on. The kitchen is fully equipped with all the pots and pans you'll require to prepare meals for your co-cottagers. With full size appliances (including dishwasher) and plenty of counter space, you have lots of room for cooking and mixing up cocktails. We also have a BBQ for outdoor grilling. Overlooking the lake, the deck is perfect for sunbathing, reading or eating dinner while you watch the sun go down.
The Neighbourhood:
Our cottage is located on the north shore of Lower Buckhorn Lake, which means we are connected to the Trent-Severn waterway. Clear/Stony Lakes and Buckhorn Lake can be accessed via locks. We are right next to Wolf Island Provincial Park, an amazing, quiet area perfect for canoeing and exploring. Great for bird watching!
Nearby Amenities: The town of Buckhorn is a 10 minute drive from the cottage and features a grocery store (Foodland), LCBO, tourist centre, a few restaurants and general store. A larger grocery store is located in Lakefield, about 25 minutes south.

| We had a wonderful stay of five nights and couldn't have asked for more. With having three children aged under four, we needed to book somewhere that was safe next to the lake and inside the cottage, and we were really pleased that the garden boundaries are well protected with goose wire and with good lines of sight to keep track where the children were playing. On top of the safety aspects, the cottage was fantastic! The rooms are very comfortable and well maintained, the living spaces are open and light, and the outdoor spaces are so inviting we spent most of or stay on the deck, in the garden or on the lake. We had all the necessary information on arrival and during our stay. We have lots of cherished memories from our stay and fully recommend the cottage to families looking for a relaxing getaway.

| Our family of 6 adults and 3 small children stayed here for a week in July, and we absolutely loved it! Everything about this property makes it ideal for a family vacation. We would highly recommend it!
The cottage is exceptionally clean, warm and welcoming. Very comfortable living room furniture and an awesome kitchen table overlooking the lake. Great layout and room sizes upstairs. We found the bedrooms very comfortable and quiet - our 6 month old slept the best she ever has! Amazing view from the deck. Overall, plenty of space for relaxing and enjoying the feeling of nature and privacy.
The lawn and dock area are incredibly spacious. The steps and shallow entry into the lake are awesome for kids. The water is weedy, but we didn't mind - it was warm and great for swimming. We had a boat as well as kayaks we took out around the lake, exploring and fishing. This was really fun as there are connecting lakes you can visit. Loved the hammock, Adirondack chairs and fire pit. The location of this cottage and outdoor space really put it over the top!
It's a very short drive into the town of Buckhorn, where you can find all the essentials. We checked out the local Kawartha winery (awesome fruit wine!) and the nearby Burleigh Falls as well. It's a lovely town and local area.
We had a wonderful experience communicating with the owners of this property - they are very helpful and welcoming. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here and would most definitely come back!

| What a WONDERFUL week spent on Lower Buckhorn Lake :)
Our family of 8 adults and 2 kids (4 and 7) spent a week in August and the cottage was perfect for us. I think it would also suit 4 couples/a group of friends REALLY well. Teresa was awesome to communicate with during the whole process. The cottage was exceptionally clean when we arrived. It was spacious enough for all 10 of us with multiple areas to gather, be it the dining table, the livingroom, the patio or the dock!
A big highlight for us was the large lawn area. We utilized it! Loads of room to play horseshoes, washers, croquet, toss a football, you name it. The dock was also plenty spacious for all of us.
The rooms were awesome. They were simple and clean and the beds were actually comfortable! :) Bathrooms were in tiptop shape. Loved the roomy shower in the first floor bathroom.
Air conditioning was much needed as it was a very hot week, so we were thankful for that.
The kitchen had all the amenities needed - and we loved using the bbq outside as well.
We loved spending time in the water and using both the canoe and paddle boat. The steps to get into the water and the shallow area around the dock were both great for young kids. We loved swimming out to and lounging on the floating dock too! So relaxing!
As a group we agree that the ONLY negative was that the swimming area is quite weedy - but we just sucked it up and swam anyway!
Thanks Alan & Teresa :) We'll be back for sure!

| I'd easily give this a 5 star rating (6 if I could), but we didn't realize that the lake has a lot of weeds and wasn't comfortable for swimming unless you went out tot he middle of the lake. That said, the kids didn't really care and the neighbors were fantastic and took us tubing and out to the middle to go swimming. The cottage and the property are phenomenal. Get rid of the weeds and this is one of the best cottages I've ever been to . . . but I like to swim!

Owner response: We're so glad you loved the cottage and the property so much to want to give it 6 stars! We would have to agree of course. We're disappointed you felt the lake so unsuitable as to dock us 2 whole stars however. We would have to disagree with you on this, as would most people! Kids and adults alike spend hoursand hours swimming back and forth to our raft. What our little piece of Lower Buckhorn Lake boasts is a shallow, gradual entry with a sandy bottom that is absolutely perfect for kids to play in. There is grass in the lake of course - a vital and healthy component of a thriving lake. What we do not have is a deep and sudden drop off for diving (terrible for little kids) - a fact I would have happily shared with you in one of our many conversations during the booking process. But this is typical of the Kawarthas and of our lake! As part of the Trent-Severn, there is a fantastic opportunity to rent a boat and explore, or simply take our paddle boat just a little further out to find some deeper water. I'm glad you got to meet the neighbours and do just that. Enjoy the rest of your summer! Teresa | |
