One small recently remodeled full bathroom with shower (no tub). The staircase can be gated to make it child proof. A clothes washing machine but no dryer is available.
The well equipped cook's kitchen has an electric stove w/oven, 2 refrigerators, a microwave, a Cuisinart, a rice cooker, a waffle maker, toaster, coffee maker, cutlery, dishes for 12, dishtowels, and a Weber charcoal grill.
15 foot canvas covered canoe, an inflatable stand up paddle board, an inflatable towable, and child and adult life jackets. Multiple hammocks, a badminton set, a bocce ball set, and am/fm radio. Indoor and outdoor children's toys and games plus adult board games and jig saw puzzles. There is an extensive library on a multiplicity of subjects including many children's books and mysteries.
There are three docks forming two slips (one is wide enough for a pontoon boat). The cottage draws water from the lake for the kitchen and bathroom. Lake water is not potable. We supply a large carboy of potable water for every renter.
The island is located at the mouth of Briton Bay. Easiest boat access is from Portland, approximately 2 miles. Portland Ontario is approximately 1.5 hours from Ottawa and about 4 to 5 hours from Toronto and Montreal. NOTE: "Island" means you must have (or rent) a boat. Pontoon boats are available for rent in Portland.
A quote from one of our guests: "For the past three years we have spent an idyllic week of summer fun at this unique Rideau treasure." George and Nancy Sheffield -- Ontario

| Having rented cottages in Quebec, Ontario, and Newfoundland over the past 15 years I can say with absolute confidence that this is the most beautiful and inspiring one yet. I historic house from the 1920s, decorated with impeccable, but simple taste, it made a wonderful and spacious retreat for the entire family. The swimming is excellent, the fishing and bird watching even better. I give it my top recommendation.

| Not much to add about this cottage that has already been said, other than the description in Cottages Canada does not do it justice. It was far better than we could have every imagined. We were fortunate to have been able to co-ordinate the rental of a pontoon boat in Portland, with the one week that was available to us. The cottage manager, Bob Howard, met us at the boat rental place and we followed him to Fairview Island. He showed us around and made sure we knew where everything was and answered any questions we had. The swimming was excellent, and some family members even snorkeled around the island with noodles, just relaxing and enjoying all the marine life. I had the best smallmouth bass fishing ever (catch and release) right off the dock. We also went through the locks a couple of times, so those who had never seen them in operation before, could see first-hand how they work. This is a big, beautiful, clean clear lake, great for cruising around, with lots to see and do. We would certainly go back again and can highly recommend Fairview to anyone who is looking for a great classic cottage, in a private and peaceful setting.

| Fairview is a special place, our family's new favorite of the half-dozen or so cottages we have rented in Ontario. For starters, it's actually a cottage, not the new homes that pass for many "cottages" today. It's been in the owner's family for generations, and you can tell it's been well and truly loved. Very well stocked with both necessities & diversions, no wifi but cell/wifi hotspot works if that's your thing. Warm water (17-18 C in June, warmer than the Algarve!) for swimming right off the dock, lots of trees for shade, gorgeous views, peace and quiet. Bayview Yacht Harbour is about 10m away by pontoon boat, Westport for groceries/LCBO maybe an hour if you hit the Narrows lock right. Highlights: the deer that swims to the island to graze outside your window, shelves of mystery novels, loons at night, hammocks in the trees, exploring Big Rideau Lake and several locks on the system. We loved everything about it, would go back in a shot. Protip: if you rent a pontoon boat and have kids/teenagers, rent a tube/towing rope too.

| We have been thrilled to rent this wonderful classic cottage for several years and will come back again next year. Fairview Island is a wooded private island on the beautiful Big Rideau Lake. Some of our favorite treasures of the island and cottage are the 3 large docks, beautiful mornings and evenings, wrap around porch, clear water, outstanding fishing (especially bass) and, of course, the privacy. The cottage itself is a classic with 3 bedrooms downstairs and 3 bedrooms upstairs, a cozy living room, stone fireplace (1924) and glassed in large dining/porch area. We rent a pontoon which is a perfect boat for exploring the lake in comfort and at a good speed. An ideal family or get-away summer vacation/adventure!
