The Cottage

Big Straggle Lake offers year-round fishing, great swimming, and we have a rowboat and two pedal boats that you may use to explore the lake, several islands, and even a hidden passageway to Little Straggle Lake. Our dock is large enough for sunning yourself on hot days or just hanging out with friends on the chairs and picnic table. There is a fire pit overlooking the lake with plenty of seating to host your party (and firewood at the ready), and a grassy area beside the cottage on which lawn games can be enjoyed. We have a full size kitchen with a double sink, microwave, stove/oven, full-sized fridge, and BBQ for you to enjoy. At your disposal are many other personal appliances such as a coffee maker, toaster, Actifry (alternative to deep-fryer), George Foreman grill, and blender. There is plenty of storage space for whatever you bring up as well. The living room has a widescreen TV, DVD player, and VCR. There is a small TV, DVD player, and VCR in the first bedroom (the one with four bunk beds). We have lots of VHS tapes and a few DVDs to watch, books to read, and games to play, should you find yourself stuck inside on a rainy day or need something to do in the evening. In the living room, there is also a wood-burning stove to which you may curl up to after you build yourself a fire in the evening.

The following are some tips for enjoying our cottage:

Linens & Towels - Please bring your own linens (or sleeping bags) & towels. Supplied for you at the cottage are pillows, comforters, duvets & duvet covers, extra blankets, and pillow & mattress protectors.

We rented Darryl's cottage for 3 nights with my in-laws and our daughter. The entire exprience was quite pleasant. Here're things I liked:

- It got a splendid view. The opening in the trees around the cottage gives it a great view across the lake, yet some privacy as well. Combined with the fall colors we just think it'd be difficult to beat.

- Plenty of things to do. You can go boating, hiking, barbeque, or even watching DVDs which we actually did.

- The equipments/appliances provided are sufficient and practical.

Things that could be better:
Garbage collection. The landfall site where we dumped the garbage was a bit far. Not a big deal if you are heading south on 10 anyways. But it's a detour if you want to head north to Algonquin.

6 adults enjoyed a very peaceful and relaxing "Big Chill" week. The cottage is well oriented (sun) and there is a splendid view of the lake (which is clean and clear) and star gazing from the dock was spectacular. Plenty of room, the beds and furniture were very comfy. We enjoyed some great fishing not far from the dock. Lots of paddles and life jackets for the small fleet of recreational water craft. The water is shallow at the dock and there is a raft for swimming just off shore. The owners are very helpful and respond quickly. This is a great retreat.

My family & I loved this cottage! It is well designed with everything you need and on a peaceful lake. Great view of the lake from the fire pit. Our 6 year old loved sleeping in a bunk bed in the kids room , the large selection of kids' movies & kayaking to the next lake for ice cream. Playing super Mario bros was a treat & blast from the past. The owners were very helpful and available if we needed anything. We hope to return.

Positives: We had a great time at the Hazenberg cottage. The kids had fun fishing and enjoyed some pedal boating as well as swimming off the floating dock. There are plenty of life jackets and fishing rods in the back shed. The cottage itself is clean, well maintained, comfortable and roomy. Everything required to cook and serve a meal is available. There are plenty of board games and videos for evening entertainment. The lake is peaceful throughout the day. Not many loud boats pass through. We also enjoyed checking out the moon and planets with our telescope off the dock as the sky becomes completely dark with no light pollution at all.

Negatives: The bonfire area and walkways are very rocky. Rocks are sticking out of the ground which are a tripping hazard especially when a fire is burning. We all (adults and children) came close to tripping in those areas of the cottage. It is also difficult to find a level spot to place your chair when sitting around the fire. The firewood area is exposed to the elements which makes it difficult to get a fire going with wet and soggy firewood. Although we like to fully disconnect when we go to the cottage, cell phone signal is pretty much unavailable. Don't count on using your device for internet or calls during your stay. Some of the bunk beds had loose screws in the ladder which luckily I was able to retighten with a set of allen keys that I keep in my car.

Overall we had a pleasant stay and would definitely recommend to others.

We've been guests at Darryl & Andrea's cottage 3 years in a row now !!
We love this cottage and lake, especially for the fishing. I caught a trophy 6lb large mouth just across the lake in front of the cottage. I brought my own electric trolling motor and attached it to the row boat, but there are a lot of oars in the shed and 2 pedal boats. Use of the 2 Kayaks is really fun and it's easy to navigate the calm waters of Big Straggle. This place is your home away from home.. it has everything you need, inside and out. The BBQ is also new, great quality and very clean.. so the grilling was amazing !
We will definitely book earlier for next summer, so that we can stay more than 2 nights.

Thanks again for letting us stay at your wonderful cottage.

Joe & Ying
