Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) Can you swim in the river at the cottage? Yes! The river is swimmable in several areas both upstream and downstream of the private dam. In the summer, we personally like to swim downstream of the dam with our young kids - it's a great way to cool off on hot days!
Here's a bit of background about the dam - it's a 120-year-old structure that once powered a sawmill on the property back in the late 1800s and early 1900s. (That's actually how Mill Road got its name!) Today, it's one of the most unique and charming features of the Riverfront Hideaway.
As for swimming conditions: The water is shallow in some areas and gets up to 6-7 feet deep in others - especially closer to the bridge, where many guests enjoy cooling off and splashing around. You can even swim right up to the base of the dam, which is a fun experience!
We recommend: - Water shoes - the riverbed is rocky - Life jackets for young children - for safety and peace of mind (Please note: life jackets are not currently provided at the cottage, so be sure to pack your own.)
Can you fish in the river at the cottage? Absolutely - while it's not a premier fishing destination, there are definitely some fish in the river behind the cottage - mostly smaller pike and trout, especially upstream of the dam. You'll also often see fish gathering at the base of the dam, swimming into the current as they try to make their way upstream.
While it's not considered trophy fishing, it's a fun and easy way to spend a relaxing afternoon by the river and it's perfect for casual fishing or fun with the kids - and many of our guests have had a great time catching a few fish right from the backyard.
If you're looking for more serious fishing or hoping to catch larger fish, we recommend heading just 5 minutes up the road to Robson Lake or Hines Lake - both offer better fishing conditions and are locally known spots.
Restaurants | Things to Do | Points of Interest & Ice Cream Markdale (15 minutes from the cottage - you likely drove through it on your way in) - Marilynne's Restaurant - A farm-focused restaurant with tons of chic country charm. Hands down the best burgers in the area. - Big Cheese Pizza - Great for a casual night in with pizza and wings. - Scoop Me Up! - Our go-to ice cream shop, located across from Marilynne's and the TD Bank. -Fun fact: Markdale is home to Chapman's Ice Cream and the town is proud of their ice cream! Essentials: There's also a Foodland and Dollarama in town for groceries and supplies.
Chatsworth (15 minutes away) Kettles Back Home Cookin' - Comfort food, generous portions, and a cozy, local vibe.

| Enjoyed an amazing girls weekend at the cottage. Snow was up past our knees so it meant we spent most of the time inside. 12 ladies all in one house and we did not feel cramped. Between the games room, the rec room, hot tub and spacious living room there was lots to do.
While we didn't need to contact the hosts at all through the stay, as everything was thought of and in order when we got there, the hosts were great to deal with leading up to the weekend. Very pleasant and responsive to inquiries.
I will definitely be back. Can't wait to see the property in the summer!

| Probably the most amazing stay we've ever had! An excellent, private and super comfortable home that we didn't want to leave after our week. We had to reach out to the hosts a few times (minor things) and they were very responsive, ensuring we had all the information we needed quickly. The front porch was my favourite place to hang out, having tea on the swing most mornings. The hot tub was clean and a lovely place to relax before bed. My family loved the games in the garage and basement. We cooked most nights and the kitchen is very well equipped. The house is spacious, quiet and clean. I highly recommend this property to anyone for a peaceful, relaxing stay!

| Such a beautiful home and property to visit, would love to stay again! Our large family fit perfectly and there was something for all ages to do, they really have thought of everything here. The hosts are super accommodating, easygoing, friendly, and are great at what they do. The home is perfectly decorated and set up, has all the amenities anyone would need for their stay, super clean and well stocked. The hot tub is in the perfect place to enjoy the sunrise and the beautifully manicured backyard or to sit and gaze up at the stars at night. The garage our family loved, there is so much to do in there, and is sound proof from the house and sleeping children. Sitting on the back deck and or out by the waterfall is so peaceful and serene, great for relaxing and reading a book. The house is super close to town only 15 minutes away grocery store, beer store, lcbo, gas, tims, etc. and also super close for some day excursions like beautiful waterfalls/hikes, blue mountain, and much more. Would definitely recommend staying here and hope to again soon!
