Wake up above a wildlife-filled beaver pond, spend the day hiking through Canadian Shield forest, soak in the hot tub under the stars, and end the evening by the wood stove. Welcome to the Birdhouse, a cozy cottage that is a design-forward luxury retreat ideally suited for couples and small groups.

A unique architect-designed retreat situated on 1.7 acres of forest overlooking a large beaver pond, it is the epitome of a private nature escape. Named the Birdhouse for the huge variety of birds sighted. Everything from bald eagles to hummingbirds. You only need to take a few steps from the cottage before you experience the most wonderful forest bathing, surrounded by ancient pine and oak trees.

The 860 square-foot house is designed in the Scandinavian/hygge atmosphere with two bedrooms, one bathroom, a generous great room with 12 foot high ceilings and a wonderful screened porch. There is also a large screened porch with the couch and dining table that is a wonderful retreat even on rainy days. The fully equipped kitchen has a gas stove, fridge, double sink, dishwasher, bar sink, and a variety of appliances. There is a TV with a casting device and a woodstove to keep cozy. It is equipped with high-speed internet (Starlink). And if you are looking for a digital detox, the cottage is equipped with books, board games, puzzles, playing cards, numerous DVDs, and a stereo with wired-in speakers to which you can cast your favourite streaming music. The cottage is comfortably equipped with two queen size beds, and a pull out couch. The bathroom has a shower with a built-in seat. There are two large decks to the north end to the south of the building allowing you to be cool on hot days and warm in the sun on cool days.

The Birdhouse Retreat was awesome!

My wife and I were looking for a peaceful getaway and the birdhouse was that perfect place.

The cottage was welcoming and cozy with a nice layout. It provides a screened porch, outside deck with Adirondack chairs to chill and get back to nature.
We spent our days snowshoeing, going for walks and even met a friendly neighbour and their cute dog from a cottage down the road!
In the evening the cottage delivered again with a crackling, warm fireplace and if you step outside, it's a fantastic place to stargaze.

We had the best sleep!

The surrounding small towns are quaint, with charming stores, restaurants and the people are very friendly.
We took an afternoon to visit and stroll through the O'Hara Mills Homestead and Conservation Area. The covered bridge and streams were beautiful and gave you insight as to how the area was founded.

Overall, the Birdhouse Retreat was wonderful and we'd highly recommend it to anyone!
We definitely plan on going back again.

Owner response:
Hi Brian, we're so glad you had such a peaceful time at the Birdhouse. And thank you for the wonderful review! We are looking forward to have you stay again, soon.
Paul + Sabina

My experience at the Birdhouse was wonderful and provided a respite from hectic everyday life. Every detail in architecture, design, comfort, and site was thoughtfully considered. As a half Dane, I would describe the feeling and setting as hygge. It is definitely a place for architecture buffs and people looking for natural beauty.

To focus on the site for a moment, it is on the edge of the Canadian Shield, so there are great rocky outcroppings on the property—the site feels very untouched and natural. Just enough trees were cleared to allow a view over the cliff to the stunning marsh below. The Birdhouse includes a large screened porch overlooking this and is perfect for the view.

On the practical side, there are many nice amenities, like a wood-burning stove, full kitchen, and even good internet access.

Also, it is not too far from Perth, which is a fun day trip for window shopping and well-preserved buildings.

Paul and Sabina were very helpful and responsive throughout our entire visit. We plan to stay again soon.

Hi Matthew, we were so glad to hear you took advantage of the wonderful amenities at the Birdhouse and found time to travel to Perth. It's definitely one of our favourite towns, too!
We hope to have you visit again!
