Some cottages put you on the beach. The Ravine Retreat puts you just above it — perched on Port Stanley's quiet west hill on George Street, where a wooded ravine rolls away below the deck and the only morning traffic is birdsong. Freshly renovated top to bottom in 2026, this three-bedroom retreat gives you the best of both Port Stanleys: the hush of a forest hideaway, and a short, easy walk down the hill to the sand at Erie Rest Beach, the calm, local-favourite stretch of Lake Erie shoreline on the village's west side.
If your ideal cottage weekend is coffee on a big deck with trees in every direction, an afternoon with your toes in the lake, dinner in the village, and an evening around the fire pit under the stars — this is your place.
THE SETTING
George Street sits above the west beach, tucked into the mature trees that give this side of Port Stanley its cottage-country character. The Ravine Retreat backs onto the ravine itself, so the view from the deck isn't a neighbour's fence — it's a green canyon of treetops that shifts with the seasons: lush and shady in July, a wall of golds and reds by October. You're a few minutes from everything in the village, yet the property feels genuinely tucked away. It's the kind of quiet that surprises people who only know Port Stanley from its bustling main beach on a Saturday.
And when you do want the bustle, it's all right there. Walk down the hill and you're at Erie Rest Beach. Carry on along the water and you reach the harbour, the lift bridge, the shops and patios of the village core, and Port Stanley's famous Blue Flag Main Beach — one of the finest freshwater beaches in Ontario.
THE COTTAGE
Renovated in 2026, the interior is fresh, bright and comfortable — new finishes throughout, a full kitchen with everything you need to cook a proper cottage meal, and a relaxed open living space made for board games, movie nights and slow mornings. Wi-Fi is included, so you can stream, share your beach photos, or sneak in a remote-work day with a better view than your office.
Sleeping arrangements for up to 6 guests, in three bedrooms:
• Bedroom 1 — King bed. A proper retreat-within-the-retreat for the grown-ups.
• Bedroom 2 — Queen bed. Comfortable for couples or grandparents.
• Bedroom 3 — Bunk room with a twin over a double. The room every kid claims first.
The bunk room makes this layout genuinely flexible: two couples plus kids, a family of six, three couples on a getaway, or grandparents bringing the grandkids for a beach week — everyone gets a real bed, not a pull-out.
A clean, modern 4-piece style bathroom serves the cottage, stocked with fresh linens and towels for every stay.
OUTDOOR LIVING — THE REASON YOU'LL BOOK
The large deck is the heart of the property. It's where you'll drink your morning coffee looking over the ravine, eat lunch in the dappled shade, read all afternoon to the sound of the leaves, and linger over dinner while the sky goes pink behind the trees. There's ample space to lounge and dine outdoors, and room for the whole crew to spread out.
Down in the yard, the fire pit is ready for the classic cottage nights: marshmallows, ghost stories, a guitar if someone brought one, and that particular kind of conversation that only happens around a fire. Between the deck, the firelight and the ravine, you may find the hardest part of your beach vacation is convincing anyone to actually leave for the beach.
A SHORT WALK TO ERIE REST — AND ALL OF PORT STANLEY BEYOND
Erie Rest Beach is the west end's quieter answer to the main strip: a relaxed, sandy stretch where locals swim, kids hunt for beach glass, and sunsets over Lake Erie feel like a private show. From the cottage it's a short walk down the hill — easy enough to do twice a day, with a cooler.
From there, the whole village unfolds within walking distance or a two-minute drive:
• Main Beach — Port Stanley's Blue Flag beach, with its wide golden sand, beach volleyball, and GT's on the Beach for patio drinks steps from the water.
• Little Beach — the sheltered, shallow cove that's perfect for little swimmers.
• The harbour and lift bridge — watch the boats come and go, grab fish and chips, and stroll the pier.
• The village core — independent shops, galleries, cafés, and restaurants; enjoy everything from casual patios to memorable dinners, plus Broderick's and Shaw's Ice Cream nearby for the mandatory cottage-week cone (or several).
• Port Stanley Terminal Rail — a beloved heritage train ride up the Kettle Creek valley that kids and rail fans adore.
• Kettle Creek — kayak, paddleboard or fish where the creek meets the lake.
• Hawk Cliff — in September, one of Ontario's best spots to watch thousands of migrating hawks ride the thermals along the bluffs.
WORTH THE SHORT DRIVE
• Sparta (10 minutes) — a picture-perfect Quaker village with artisan shops, and Quai du Vin Estate Winery just beyond for tastings in the countryside.
• St. Thomas (15 minutes) — the Railway City: elevated park on the old trestle, craft breweries, the Jumbo memorial, and every errand you could need.
• London (40 minutes) — big-city dining, shopping and events when you want them.
• Roughly 2.5 hours from Toronto and from the Detroit/Windsor border — close enough for a spontaneous long weekend, far enough to feel like a real escape.
EVERY SEASON HAS A SEASON HERE
Summer is the headliner — beach days, harbour ice cream, deck dinners, fire-pit nights. But the Ravine Retreat might be at its most beautiful in the fall, when the ravine turns into a painting and the village slows to a stroll; September and October on the north shore of Lake Erie are a genuinely underrated secret, with warm lake-tempered days, hawk migrations at Hawk Cliff, harvest at the wineries, and bonfire weather every night. Spring brings the return of the songbirds to the ravine, and even winter has its charm: a quiet, cozy basecamp for holiday getaways and snowy walks on an empty beach.

WHY GUESTS LOVE IT
Port Stanley gets busy for a reason — but the crowds stay down by the main strip. Up on George Street, you get the village's best weeks with none of its noise: a renovated, comfortable cottage; a deck in the treetops; a fire pit under the stars; and a beach you can walk to before the day-trippers arrive. It's the Port Stanley trip you actually came for.
The Ravine Retreat is professionally cleaned and personally managed by local hosts — we're nearby and reachable throughout your stay, and happy to share our favourite beaches, patios and back roads. Book your dates, pack the beach bags and the marshmallows, and come see what the west hill has been hiding.
