Elsie Lake Cottage is an off-grid experience with all the comforts of home. Get away from the frantic pace to a tranquil wilderness lake where you fall asleep to loon songs and wake up to the smell of coffee perking on the stove. Swim, paddle and fish in the clean lake or walk and bike on the woodland paths while you watch for wildlife and a variety of birds. There's just enough cell signal and WIFI to keep you connected without being intrusive. Nearby Otter Lake offers a good convenience store, gas, hardware and lumber, laundry and even a hairdresser. The Shawville hospital and full grocery are thirty minutes away.
The cottage sleeps 7 people, five (Queen, double and single) in the second story open concept loft and two (sofa bed) in the ground floor living room. Bedding, towels and beach towels are supplied. The big eat-in kitchen is equipped with a four burner gas stove with oven, a propane fridge with small freezer, dishes, utensils, cooking basics, and kitchen linens. Kettle, stovetop coffee makers, stovetop toaster, and pots and pans of all sizes are provided. Light a fire in the efficient wood stove on chilly days and keep a pot of soup simmering there too.
The compact bathroom offers shower, sink and flush toilet. There is a nearby well-kept outhouse. Safe, sturdy stairs lead down to the dock and lakeside. The lake bottom is coarse sand, water two feet deep at the shore and sloping gradually, no sudden drops. There is a second shallow sandy beach on the property a short walk from the cottage. At the front of the cottage, with a panoramic sunset view is a social area with a wood-burning fireplace, three decks, a large picnic table, and lawn chairs. A canoe, paddleboard and life jackets are supplied. The owners drink the icy cold well water with no problem, or you may bring your own drinking water.
Available by the week (6 nights, Sat to Friday) for $1,200 plus tax. $500 refundable damage deposit which includes a $100 charge for garbage left behind. Thirty minutes from Shawville; less than 2 hours from Ottawa.
